![]() How proficient would you be at driving on the interstate in the rain at night? We must make it a priority to empower our students with tools to help them safely navigate the world wide web, because outside of our school, there are no filters or firewalls. Your blinkers, headlights, and windshield wipers are all disabled, and you have no rearview mirror. Imagine trying to learn to drive a vehicle, but your vehicle speed is controlled by governor allowing your top speed to reach 15 mph. We should not "block" or keep students from learning to find, use, or create digital media as long as they are using it responsibly. We have the responsibility to teach digital citizenship, and like anything we want students to know, understand, and be able to do, we must allow them the opportunity to practice and develop these skills. Web filters help keep students on task and focused as learners, as well as keeping them safe. ![]() We want them to be able to create and share documents, images, videos, music and other content with their classmates and the wider world. There are many incentives for teachers and administrators to use web filters in their schools, from the moral to the financial. At GHE we want to make sure that our filters do not block content relevant to students' school work, research, or personal interests.
